The challenge: Too Many Returns
IDMI maintains address management for fundraisers in multiple European countries. Even in the online age, fundraising letters are the most important instrument of dialogue for these organizations.

The return rates of the fundraising letters is increasing. Too many mailings were going to outdated addresses. Only a postal correction occurred in advance – the addresses were correct at the household level, but whether the recipient actually still lived there could not be determined before the mailing campaign. There were no countryspecific address reconciliations and therefore no comprehensive address updating.

For addresses from the UK, Germany and the Netherlands, POSTADRESS GLOBAL organizes reconciliations with relocation addresses as well as deceased and undeliverable information. Addresses from Austria are reconciled against the national Robinson list.

The sources and the intensity of the reconciliations is controlled by customer value. Stricter reconciliation criteria applies to good, currently active donors as compared to older donors whose last response is years in the past.

Thanks to the optimized address management, the returned mail rate sank considerably. In the case of one of the fundraisers, more than 5% of the addresses were recognized as outdated in advance; this way return rates could be reduced significantly. Because more mailings arrived at the recipients, the donation total rose by 13% for the fundraiser.

Through saved costs and additional response + additional revenue, the efficiency of the mailings improved. The fundraising letters brought the organization 34% total additional turnover than in previous campaigns
